Euro 2025: Switzerland qualifies for the quarter -finals in the 92nd minute, endless Finland

Vermont Green FC: Triumphs in the field, impact beyond the game

Switzerland has for the first time in the quarter -finals of the European Women’s Championships, but boy, they left it late.

The 92nd minute equalizer of Riola Xhemaili sent the hosts to the expense of Finland, throwing the crowded Geneva stadium.

If one or the other fans base felt the nerves in advance on what was actually a direct elimination game, you would never have guessed. Outside before kicking off, a wave of red shirts went down to the ground. Inside, the important quota of Finnish fans became known from extinguishing.

Drums, non-stop song, combined with the number of Swiss fans hoping to see their team making history on the floor at home, has created a sensational atmosphere.

Switzerland with possession, Finland with the threat

On the ground, the Swiss monopolized the 15 minutes of opening. Svenja Fölmli and Noëlle Maritz saw shots blocked quickly after six minutes.

The best chance for the Pia Sundhage team occurred in the 10th minute. The cross of Schedney Schertenleib tried the alto calligaris to try a bold bike kick. Unfortunately for the central defender, she did everything in timing and the ball fled for a return.

The Finnish then moved away from life, after resisting the storm. Although some corners were everything they could bring together, we led to a wheelbarrow of the goal mouth after Livia Peng overturned a head of Oona Sevenius.

But if it was not for an alert guard of Peng, Finland would have gone to half-time. The free kick of Eveliina Summanen was brilliant towards the goal by Eva Nyström. The Finn knew very little, but Peng reacted in time to stifle the ball.

A dominant and anxious Swiss

The second half was almost a carbon copy of the first. Switzerland has largely dominated possession and chances, but could not find this last moment of quality. Apparently little willing to press the remote relaxation, Marko Saloranta’s team has never been duly intro-united by their Swiss counterparts.

Then, with just over 10 minutes, everything has changed. Sanni Frasssi managed to get rid of three Swiss defenders in the box. While the ball broke at Emma Koivisto, it was triggered by Calligaris. Finland has received a penalty kick, reporting a disaster for Switzerland.

Natalia Kuikka intensified and converted. In the city that houses one of the United Nations offices, the newly established Finnish embassy behind Peng’s goal was unleashed. The Swiss clock was dying. The chances came and came for Xhemaili and Ana Crnogorčević while the game entered the time of stopping.

And then it happened. This goal. THE aim. A goal that could transform women’s football into Switzerland. Alayah Pilgrim, Lehmann and Crnogorčević exchanged some careful passes between the Finnish defense. Crnogorčević played the ball inside to Géraldine Reutele, who whipped a low cross in the six -meter box. And there were Xhemaili to sweep home.

The stadium exploded. Concrete under my feet has turned into rubber. The Finnish hearts were broken, Swiss dreams were again alive. The full -time whistle has caused more celebrations. The fans left the stadium and in the main station, singing, singing and applauding.

In the most dramatic circumstances, Switzerland won the quarter -finals of the European Championships for the first time. A hard 1-1 draw against Finland was just enough to get second place in the group on the difference in goals. On the floor at home, they did not simply advance – they won the heart of a nation.
