The wide receiver of the New York Jets, Garrett Wilson, whose future with the team appeared troubled at the end of last season, concluded an agreement on a contract extension of $ 130 million over four years which makes him one of the highest paid receivers of the NFL, said ESPN sources on Monday.
The agreement includes $ 90 million guaranteed, the fourth in the contract of a wide receiver, said the sources to Schefter. It marks the first time in the history of the NFL that a receiver received on average more than $ 31 million after playing only three seasons. The average of $ 32.5 million in its new agreement is the highest fifth among NFL level receptors.
Wilson, written 10th in total in 2022, had two years to play on his recruit contract, including his fifth year option in 2026 (16.8 million dollars guaranteed).
For jets, the contract is significant on several levels. Most importantly, he locks a leading player throughout the 2030 season. The organization also tries to negotiate an extension of the Cornerback Gardner sauce, written fourth in the general classification in 2022.
This is the first time as part of the NFL’s current financial system, which entered into force in 2011, that the jets extended a former first round choice during its first year of eligibility (after three seasons). The previous one to prolong was the defensive platform Quinnen Williams, who had to wait four years.
The new jet regime, led by coach Aaron Glenn and managing director Darren Mougey, said from the start that his goal was to keep the best young players, which the past regimes had not done.
“I hope that I am a jet for life and that we ride this thing and that all our best days are in front of us,” said Wilson in May.
Wilson posted career heights last season during receptions (101), yards to receive (1,104) and touchdown (seven), but its body language in the game, combined with cryptic comments on its future, created the perception that it was dissatisfied. There was speculation that he envisaged commercial demand.
Two things contributed to the change of attitude of Wilson. It started with the arrival of coach Aaron Glenn, who said he wanted to get the ball in Wilson “as much as possible.” The quarter-back change was also an important factor.
It was clear last season that Wilson and Aaron Rodgers did not go to the eyes, leading to tension in their relationship. Rodgers was released in March. Now Wilson will catch Justin Fields passes, his former Ohio teammate. The two players sprang from Reunion.
Wilson, who will be 25 years old next week, is lucky to rewrite the book of Jets Records. He is the first player since George Sauer (1966-1968) to record three consecutive reception seasons of 1,000 yards.
He is one of the only five players in the history of the NFL to exceed 1,000 reception yards and 80 receptions during each of his first three seasons. The others are Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, Michael Thomas and Odell Beckham Jr.
The lack of stability in the quarter of the jets makes Wilson’s achievements even more impressive. Since entering the league, he has caught different seven -quarter passes – Rodgers (98), Zach Wilson (95), Joe Flacco (27), Mike White (22), Trevor Siemian (19), Tim Boyle (12) and Chris Streveler (three).
